Who We Are

We design and hold intentional, safe, and reflective spaces we call Modern Villages where learning happens through experience, dialogue, and shared practice rather than instruction alone.

Our Story

Connected Development grew from our lived experiences, our shared questions, and our deep care for people and the communities they belong to.

The work began before the organisation existed. In 2018, we created the STEP Programme after witnessing, first hand, how many young people were moving through education without enough space to pause, reflect, and grow into themselves. Through Mabuse’s work in schools and Farah’s role in student development at the University of Cape Town, we saw young people navigating important transitions without opportunities to build self-awareness, confidence, and real-world capability. STEP emerged as our response, a space to learn by doing, to be exposed to new worlds, and to grow alongside others in community.

Wafaa’s long-standing work with community-based organisations/initiatives also revealed another truth. Community workers and grassroots leaders were carrying the weight of social change with limited resources, little support, and almost no space to care for their own wellbeing. We saw how unsustainable this was, and how deeply it impacted both people and the communities they served. These insights later shaped the Roots & Wings Network, a platform rooted in care, collaboration, and collective capacity.

As our work deepened, another need became impossible to ignore. We saw how many men and boys were carrying inherited ideas about masculinity that left little room for vulnerability, reflection, or choice. Then in 2022 the Unchained Platform was developed in response to the growing need for healthier spaces where men and boys could explore, question, and redefine masculinity on their own terms.

As these experiences came together, a shared belief took root: personal growth and community wellbeing are inseparable. We are shaped by the world around us, and we also shape it in return. When people are given space to reflect, connect, and grow with intention, they show up differently, for themselves, for others, and for their communities.

Connected Development was registered in 2021 and exists to hold these spaces. Through the STEP Programme, the Unchained Platform, and the Roots & Wings Network, we create environments that centre self-awareness, connection, exposure, and practical learning; supporting individual growth in service of stronger, more connected communities.

Our Approach

We recognise that people are shaped by their past and present experiences, and that with awareness and intention, they can also shape their futures and the communities they are part of.

  • Experiential – grounded in lived experience, projects, and exposure

  • Reflective – supporting individuals to understand themselves and how they impact the world

  • Affirming – creating environments where people feel seen, heard, and valued
